If you’ve spent time around Christians, you’ve probably heard someone say they have a “relationship with God.” But, what does that actually mean?

Unlike many religions that focus primarily on following rules or performing rituals, Christianity is about knowing God personally. The Bible teaches that God created us to know Him, but our sin separated us from Him. That’s why Jesus came: to restore that broken relationship. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, trusting that His death and resurrection paid for our sins, we are forgiven and welcomed into God’s family.

That relationship doesn’t end there. It begins there.

Just like any healthy relationship, your relationship with God grows as you spend time with Him. The more you know Him, the more you’ll recognize His love, trust His character, and desire to follow Him.

One of the most important ways we grow is through prayer. Prayer doesn’t have to be formal or filled with impressive words. It’s simply talking with God. You can thank Him, ask for wisdom, confess your struggles, share your fears, or simply tell Him what’s on your heart. He cares about every part of your life: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Another essential part of growing is reading the Bible. Scripture is God’s Word, and through it we learn who He is, what He has done for us, and how He wants us to live. You don’t have to understand everything at once. Start with one of the Gospels, like John, and ask God to help you understand what you’re reading. Over time, His Word will shape your thinking and strengthen your faith.

Christians also often talk about “walking with God”. This simply means including Him in your everyday life. Instead of only thinking about God on Sundays or during prayer, you begin inviting Him into every decision, conversation, challenge, and celebration.

Walking with Christ means asking yourself questions like:

  • Does the way I speak reflect God’s love?
  • How should I respond when something dishonest or unethical happens at work or school?
  • Am I trusting God with my worries, or carrying them by myself?
  • Are the movies, music, websites, or social media I’m consuming helping me grow closer to Christ, or pulling my heart away from Him?

As you grow, you may find that God gently changes some of your habits, attitudes, and priorities. These changes aren’t about earning His love; you already have that through Jesus. Instead, they’re the natural result of becoming more like the One you’re walking with.

The Bible describes this transformation beautifully:

“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

A few verses later, Paul explains what that life begins to look like:

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22–23)

This doesn’t happen overnight. Every believer is growing, learning, and depending on God’s grace every day.

If you’re new to the faith, remember that God never intended for you to walk alone. Spend time reading the Bible, pray honestly, and look for a healthy church or small group where you can learn alongside other believers. Christian community encourages us, answers questions, and helps us keep growing when life gets difficult.

Most importantly, remember that your relationship with God isn’t measured by perfection or by you doing all of the items on a list. It’s measured by direction. As you continue trusting Jesus, spending time with Him, and inviting Him into every part of your life, you’ll discover that walking with Christ isn’t about checking boxes; it’s about knowing the One who loves you more than anyone else ever could.
