“What does God want me to do?”
It’s a question most Christians ask at some point. Maybe you’re choosing a career, considering a relationship, facing a major change or simply wondering what direction your life should take. You want to follow God, but how do you know what His will actually is?
The good news is that discovering God’s will isn’t about decoding a secret plan. God invites us to know Him, trust Him and follow Him one step at a time.
First, Start With What God Has Already Said
When we’re searching for direction, one of the best places to begin is God’s Word.
The Bible may not tell you which job to accept or where to live, but it clearly reveals how God wants us to live. Scripture teaches us to love God and others, forgive, serve, pursue what is good and become more like Christ.
Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” As we spend time in Scripture or even praying Scripture, our thinking begins to change, and we become better able to recognize what honors God, and maybe even understand what our next step should be.
Bring Your Decisions to God in Prayer
God also invites us to talk with Him about the decisions in front of us.
James 1:5 tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God for it. Prayer isn’t simply asking God to give us a sign. It’s an opportunity to surrender our plans, ask for wisdom and become more attentive to His leading.
Sometimes clarity comes quickly. Other times, we may need to keep praying and trusting while we wait. Even just talking through it with God can often lead us to His will.
Seek Godly Wisdom
God often uses other believers to help us see a situation more clearly. Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”
Trusted Christian friends, pastors and mentors can offer biblical wisdom, ask questions we haven’t considered and pray alongside us. Their advice shouldn’t replace Scripture or prayer, but it can be an important part of discerning our next step.
Trust God When You Don’t Have the Whole Plan
Perhaps the hardest part of seeking God’s will is accepting that He doesn’t always show us the entire path at once.
Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust in the Lord rather than relying only on our own understanding. Following God often means taking the next faithful step without knowing exactly where it will lead.
God’s will for your life is about more than making the “right” big decisions. It’s about knowing Him, trusting Him and faithfully living according to what He has already revealed.
You don’t need to see the whole road ahead to follow God. You simply need to trust the One who does.
