If you have ever wondered, “How do I know if God is talking to me?” , then you’re not alone. Many believers struggle with recognizing God’s voice with the noise of daily life, or just don’t even know where to begin to hear Him. The good news is that God is always speaking; we just need to learn how to listen. Here are a few of the ways to get started listening for Him:
God Speaks Through Scripture
The clearest way God speaks to us is through His Word. The Bible isn’t just an ancient book; it’s alive and active (Hebrews 4:12). Every time we open it, God uses it to reveal His truth, wisdom, and direction for our lives.
When David sought God’s guidance after a grave sin, he turned to His commandments. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” – Psalm 119:105. If you want to hear God’s voice, start by immersing yourself in Scripture. God may not speak exactly to your situation, but He almost always has some encouragement or guidance through the stories of others in His Word.
God Speaks Through Prayer
Prayer isn’t just about talking; it’s also about listening. When we pray, we invite God to lead us, and through His Spirit, He often shares His will in our hearts. We may have to be still, and listen to any thoughts that come. Often, He will change our hearts to meet His will or to trust Him in those situations as we pray. Jesus Himself would often retreat to pray and listen to the Father (Luke 5:16).
If you’re unsure whether a thought or feeling is from God, ask Him for clarity. He will never contradict His Word, and He often confirms His messages through peace and wisdom.
God Speaks Through Circumstances
Sometimes, God uses life events to guide us. Let’s use Noah as an example. God didn’t just tell him to build an ark; He provided clear circumstances that confirmed the calling (Genesis 6-9). With living in a desert, and not seeing any clouds, Noah was more than likely asking “Am I hearing your correctly?” When doors open or close unexpectedly, ask: “Is God directing me?” Be careful not to rely only on circumstances, though. Always align them with Scripture and prayer to ensure you’re following His path.
God Speaks Through Others
God often speaks through wise counsel, particularly other believers in your community. Jacob experienced God using others as he journeyed home, and was unsure what to do. After wrestling with God, he walked away forever changed, with a new name and a deeper understanding of his purpose (Genesis 32:22-32). He learned that encountering God often involves struggle, but in the end, God reveals His plan. Surround yourself with friends, pastors, and mentors who have the same faith as you, and can help you discern God’s voice. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
Discerning God’s Voice
How can you tell if it’s really God speaking? Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- Does it align with Scripture? God will never contradict His Word.
- Does it bring peace? God’s voice brings clarity, not confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33).
- Is it confirmed? God often confirms His messages through repetition, through Scripture, others, and circumstances.
