In our world, we often see love coming with conditions, expectations, and limits. People say “I love you”, but what they often mean is “I love you as long as you make me happy”, or “I love you if you do what I want”. This kind of love is fragile and can disappear the moment things get hard.
God’s love is completely different.
God’s love is radical. It’s sacrificial, and most of all, it’s unconditional, meaning nothing can change His love.
Romans 5:8 says, “But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” That means God didn’t wait for us to get our lives together before loving us. He didn’t wait for us to become “good enough”. He loved us in our worst state, when we were broken, rebellious, and undeserving.
That’s what makes God’s love so different from human love. Human love often says, “You have to earn it.” God’s love says, “I give it freely.” Human love can be selfish. God’s love is selfless. Human love often disappears when things get hard, but God’s love holds strong even in the middle of our mess.
The most powerful picture of that love is found in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” God gave His Son, Jesus, knowing that He would suffer and die in our place. That’s not just a kind gesture; that’s the ultimate sacrifice. That’s a kind of love that most of us can’t even comprehend.
Can you imagine loving someone enough to give up your own child for them? This is not just someone you love, but someone who has ignored you, betrayed you, or even hated you? That’s the deep and abiding love God has for us.
Jesus didn’t come to love people who were easy to love. He sat with outcasts, He healed those others avoided and He forgave those who didn’t deserve it. He even prayed for the people who crucified Him, saying, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)
That’s not how the world loves, but it’s how God loves.
And here’s the amazing thing: God wants you to know that love personally, not just read about it or hear it in a sermon. He wants to wrap you in it. To walk with you. To carry you when you fall. To forgive you when you mess up, and to never leave your side.
No matter what you’ve done. No matter how far you’ve wandered. No matter how long it’s been since you’ve talked to Him. His love is still reaching for you.
If you’ve only ever experienced the world’s version of love, conditional and shallow, then maybe it’s time to discover the real thing. The kind of love that can change your life. The kind of love that never gives up.That’s God’s love, and it’s for you. To learn more about God’s love, visit our Ready page.
