Sin is always a hard concept to understand when you first start following Jesus. New believers often wonder, “What happens if I sin now? Does God still love me? Have I lost my salvation? Do I have to ask for forgiveness every time?”
You’re not alone if this is you. Many new believers struggle with these questions, especially when they realize they still make mistakes after becoming a Christian.
The good news is that your relationship with God is not based on how many sins you make or don’t make. You aren’t expected to be perfect because there is only one who can be – Jesus. When you trusted in Him as your Savior, God forgave your sins, past, present and future, and welcomed you into His family. That doesn’t change every time you fail.
The Bible gives believers incredible assurance in Romans 8:38-39, where it says “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. Not your mistakes. Not your bad days. Not even the sins you still struggle with.
However, sin can affect your closeness with God. Think of it like a friendship. If you hurt a close friend, the friendship isn’t over, but something needs to be made right so the relationship can be restored. In the same way, when Christians sin, God invites them to come back to Him in honesty and repentance.
1John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” God doesn’t want you to hide from Him when you sin. He wants you to come to Him. He already knows your struggles and loves you anyway. He’s just waiting for you to come to Him.
As you continue following Jesus, you’ll begin to grow and change. Some sins may be easier to overcome than others, and there may be times when you stumble. You may struggle with the same sin over and over. That’s part of the journey of learning to trust and obey God. The Holy Spirit is working in your life, helping you become more like Christ a little bit every day.
So if you’ve sinned after becoming a Christian, don’t give up and don’t think God has abandoned you or that you aren’t a believer. Instead, talk to Him, confess your sin, receive His forgiveness, and keep moving forward.
Following Jesus isn’t about never failing; it’s about trusting Him when you do. God’s grace is bigger than your mistakes, and His love for His children never runs out. Want to learn more about how to grow in your relationship with Jesus? Check out our Set To Grow page.
