When life feels steady, when things are working out, your needs are met, and your days are relatively peaceful, it’s easy to move through life without pausing to thank God. Gratitude can quietly slip into the background.
But these seasons, as calm as they might be, can carry a quiet risk. There’s a tendency to forget how deeply we still need Him. We start to rely more on ourselves without even realizing it – a simple decision here and there or a day or two without any type of prayer.
Gratitude is more than a once-a-year practice. It should be a daily discipline that strengthens our walk with God, keeps our hearts soft, and grows our faith, even when life feels good.
James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights…” That means everything, from the biggest breakthrough to the smallest joy, is a reminder of His presence and goodness.
1. Gratitude Keeps Your Heart Open
When we regularly thank God, we stay aware of His constant involvement in our lives. Gratitude reminds us that we are not self-sufficient; it’s God who gives us breath, peace, provision, and strength. A thankful heart is a humble heart, and humility keeps us open to God’s voice and direction.
2. It Builds Trust Over Time
Thanking God for what He’s already done helps build confidence in what He will do in the future. Gratitude creates a memory trail of God’s faithfulness, helping you trust Him in all the unknowns ahead. The more we acknowledge His presence in the everyday, the stronger our trust becomes in the tougher moments too.
3. It Deepens Your Prayer Life
Prayer isn’t just about asking; it’s about building a relationship. When we begin our prayers with thanksgiving, it changes our focus. We stop fixating on what we lack and begin rejoicing in what we’ve been given. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
When we pray with gratitude, anxiety and discontentment loses its grip, and faith takes root.
Tools for Practicing Gratitude Daily
If you want to grow in gratitude, here are some simple ways to get started:
- Gratitude Journal: Write down a few things you’re thankful for each day. Over time, you’ll begin to notice God in places you used to overlook.
- Praise-First Prayers: Begin each prayer by thanking God for who He is and what He’s done before asking for anything. You can even begin by focusing on the characteristics of God.
- Speak It Outloud: Share what you’re thankful for with others. Gratitude multiplies when it’s shared. Instead of only going around the table sharing what you are thankful for on Thanksgiving, make it more of a daily practice with your family.
- Anchor with Scripture: Meditate on verses like 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Gratitude is a quiet but powerful way to keep your faith growing, your heart focused, and your eyes fixed on Jesus, not just in November, but every single day.
Because when we live thankful lives, we live aware of His goodness, and that awareness changes everything. Thinking about how to share your story of thankfulness to God, and not sure where to start?
