It’s February, the month of Valentine’s Day, cards, candy, flowers, and romantic dinners. The world is full of talk about love, but for Christians, love is more than a warm feeling or a once-a-year celebration. Love is an action or a commitment. It’s a way of living every day, in every relationship, in every space we enter.
Jesus said in John 13:35, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” That kind of love goes far beyond words or sentiment; it’s visible. It’s intentional. It’s transformational.
So, what does this love look like in real life?
1. Forgives Freely
Nothing puts Christ’s love on display more than forgiveness. The world tells us to hold grudges, get even, or cut people off. However, Jesus shows us another way. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” When we forgive, we reflect God’s heart, and sometimes, that forgiveness is exactly what someone needs to begin healing.
2. Encourages the Hurting
Life is hard, and people are carrying invisible burdens. A kind word, a listening ear, or even a simple “I’m praying for you” can bring hope to someone’s day. Proverbs 16:24 reminds us, “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Ask God if there’s someone in your life who needs encouragement, and be willing to pause and love them with your presence.
3. It’s Generous
Love gives. That doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money; it could mean giving your time, attention, or even your talents to bless someone else. Bake a meal for a neighbor. Help a coworker without being asked. Sponsor a ministry or family in need. The love of Christ is generous and sacrificial. When we give freely, we reflect His heart to the world.
4. Serves at Home First
Sometimes the hardest place to love is in our own homes, but that’s where love in action can begin. Whether it’s showing patience to your kids, supporting your spouse, or honoring your parents, Christ’s love starts with the people closest to us. Love isn’t just public; it’s personal.
5. Shines Online
In a world where social media can be full of negativity, division, and comparison, be different. Be a light. Share Scripture. Speak kindness. Resist the urge to argue or tear others down. Use your online presence to reflect Jesus. The world is watching, and your love may be what leads someone closer to Him.
Love in action is love that looks like Jesus.
It sacrifices. It serves. It forgives. It gives, and in doing so, it points people to the greatest love of all, the love of God that saves, restores, and never fails.
This Valentine’s season, let’s go beyond flowers and chocolates. Let’s be the hands and feet of Jesus, in our homes, communities, and even online. The world doesn’t just need more love; it needs His love.
